We provide one-on-one services in New York City, The Hamptons, Connecticut, and virtually. Here’s an overview of what we treat and our approach.
Reading/Writing
LGR Learning Group supports elementary through high school-aged children struggling with fundamental reading, spelling, and writing skills via the Orton-Gillingham (OG) Approach and following the “science of reading". OG involves one-on-one lessons, bespoke for each child's learning needs and paced for them to achieve mastery.
OG is …
Diagnostic and Prescriptive: Assessments are administered to determine each child’s strengths and areas that require intervention and used to create customized plans.
Structured: OG teaches phonemic awareness (the ability to comprehend and manipulate sounds), sound/symbol correspondence, types of syllables, spelling patterns, and how the English language works via a strict scope and sequence.
Direct and Explicit: Concepts are stated clearly with support given until the child is independent.
Multisensory: Visual, auditory, and tactile/kinesthetic elements are incorporated simultaneously, giving students more than one way to connect their learning, and critical for retention and retrieval of information.
Systematic: Concepts move from simple to more sophisticated, building on previously-taught content and reviewed until the child is ready to progress.
Speech-Language Pathology
Speech-language pathology is the treatment of individuals with communication challenges We specialize in assessing and creating functional client-based intervention. Our SLPs, who are ASHA-certified and licensed in New York state, are trained and proficient in the Orton-Gillingham Approach. We treat: Expressive and receptive language delays, articulation disorders (difficulty saying sounds or words and/or being understood), social skill challenges, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), auditory processing disorder, reading, writing, and spelling disabilities
Math
Like reading, in order for students to be proficient in math, they must have a command of basic concepts in order to learn new ones. Our tutors know what math skills students are expected to master in each grade, the strategies that are taught (using a number line, tables, manipulatives, and graphs, skip counting, doubling, ten teams, identifying keywords and terms in word problems, and more) and can identify which work best for your child. We combine that with a multi-sensory approach to make math make sense.
Executive Function and Structured Academic Support
Executive function skills are the skills that help children manage their lives and in the classroom, like problem-solving, flexible thinking, and self and emotional control. Children with executive function challenges may have trouble planning, prioritizing, attending to tasks like school and homework, and adapting to big and small changes. We address children’s challenges by identifying how they learn best, improving organization, describing tasks explicitly (not implicitly), setting small, achievable goals, building working memory skills, teaching strategies, self-monitoring skills, and planning and prioritizing.
